The naming of Linux drive is indicated with letters and a number such as (sda1, hda0, fda2) that depends upon the type of drive used such has sd, hd based upon SATA and IDE hard drive and number of partitions in the device.
- hd refers to IDE type drive
- sd refers to a SCSI drive
- fd for floppy disk
The third consecutive letter is for the device order (a for the first hard drive, b for second and c for third). And the number refers to the number of partition in the device starting with 0.
Example: For two SCSI hard disk with each 3 partition, naming would be sda0, sda1 & sda2 and sdb0, sdb1 & sdb2.
